If you’re anything like me—and for your sake, I hope you’re not—you probably have an earbud firmly in ear most of your day. I love to learn new things all the time, so a good portion of my day is spent listening to podcasts.
I figured I could combine two of my passions; podcasts and Halloween! So here is a list of my favorite podcast episodes that will get you in the Halloween spirit!
1- This American Life Episode 319: And the Call Was Coming from the Basement
This American Life is one of my favorite podcasts. It is expertly put together by a group of storytellers and producers lead by host Ira Glass.
Each episode, the show tackles one subject at a time, but usually in four Acts that center around different stories.
Episode 319, And Call Was Coming From the Basement, is a great episode to get into the Halloween spirit. Act two, The Hitcher, is my personal favorite.
2- Radiolab Episode Season 10/Episode 9: Ghost Stories
This American Life may be one of my favorites, but RadioLab IS my favorite. The show is hosted by Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich, and focuses on scientific topics told musically. The show relies heavily on Abumrads amazing talent at editing and putting together a compelling story on a range of topics.
Ghost Stories is split up into three different parts: Beyond the Grave, Haunted Dreams, and Ghost in the Machine. Haunted Dreams, which tells the story of a Philadelphia city reporter who was haunted by a recurring nightmare, is a must listen.
3- How Did This Get made? Episode 74: Halloween III: Season of the Witch
If you love movies—especially bad ones—and you love to laugh, How Did This Get Made? should be on your to do list!
How Did This Get Made? Is a bi-weekly podcast that is hosted by actor/writer/comedians Paul Scheer, June Diane Rapael, and Jason Mantzoukas; there is also a fourth guest host spot that is always different.
The show goes behind the scenes to talk about horrible movies and how they’re made; as the name would suggest. The three hosts are hilarious and will keep you laughing until youre on the verge of throwing up. So make sure you’re not listening in an open cafeteria or food court, because chances are, you’ll start a chain reaction of Stand By Me proportions.
Episode 74 goes behind the not-so-much a sequel, Halloween III: Season of the Witch. The only Halloween movie to not feature their iconic killer, Michael Myers…terrible idea for a movie, but left up to the HDTGM crew, its comedy gold.
4- StarTalk Radio Show With Neil DeGrasse Tyson Season 5, Episode 38
I’m a huge science nerd! One of my favorite people in the world is famed astrophysicist and science superstar, Neil deGrasse Tyson. I actually had the pleasure of interviewing him once, where he gave me parenting advice for a podcast I only recorded two episodes of…still worth it.
StarTalk is hosted by Tyson and a guest Comedian. This show is a little more like other traditional radio talk shows—awkward breaks and advertisments—but is kept from being derailed by interesting topics and the charm of the host and his frequently changing co-hosts.
Episode 38 of Season 5 is great for any skeptic who still loves all things Halloween. Tyson dives into all things Pseudoscience, such as Bigfoot, ancient aliens, and magic crystals!
5- Stuff you Should Know Podcast: How Exorcism Works
Stuff You Should Know Podcast is a show brought to you by the folks behind the website howstufworks.com and though its a little bit slower than the other podcasts on my list—I liken it to watching an episode of the Science Channels How It’s Made—it is still a great show if you’re interested in knowing all sorts of crap that you can try and break out at dinner parties…do people still do dinner parties?
For this Halloween season, you have to listen to their episode on Exorcism! Very interesting stuff, even if it is a little dull at times.
